Getting spring fever and wishing to hit the road as soon as it warms up a bit more, breakup in Fairbanks is finally underway and the days are getting longer, right now it gets dark around midnight and starts getting light about 4 in the morning. We had a very good aurora season and several draw dropping shows in March and April. I was lucky enough to see them and I got some really good photos, some of which made their way in the newspaper and on Spaceweather.com. I also now have a permanent digital aurora exhibit at the Fairbanks community museum. This will be my 3rd summer camping out in Alaska and summers in Alaska can't be beat. I love driving around at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning and seeing all the wildlife that's out that time of day, in fact I prefer driving then as it never gets dark in the summer. I intend to be on the road no later than May 15th, but I'm hoping it's a lot sooner, just watching and waiting for the weather to improve. The rivers haven't broken up yet, but when that happens I'm out of here. Will be traveling all over Alaska's road system and also spending some time in Yukon, BC and NWT. One of the places I really want to see is Wood Buffalo National Park in NWT, it's Canada's largest park and has about 5000 wild buffalo wandering around inside it, and I've never been there yet. Also going down to Cordova and spending some time at Childs Glacier, I hope to get some movies of ice calving into the Copper River. Beautiful spot that not many visitors go to but I think it's one of the most awesome attraction in Alaska. Sure, there's lots of other glaciers, but Childs is the only glacier in Alaska with a drive in campground right next to it. By the middle of August, the auroras will be returning and I'm going to spend 3 or 4 weeks up above the arctic circle on either the Dalton Highway in Alaska or the Dempster Highway in Yukon, or perhaps even both. It's hard to decide as they are both beautiful that time of year when the leaves are changing. When it starts getting cold in late September, I'll head south to visit family in Minnesota, it's been almost 5 years since I've seen any of them and I want to do some camping and canoeing with my nephew and niece in Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Lake Superior next summer. Also plan on doing some cat fishing in the Mississippi and Red rivers:o)
