Is there a such thing as the perfect tent?

Tents come in all shapes and sizes, unless you know what you want or expect in a camping tent you could shop the internet or local sporting goods store and still have a hard time making the choice that is right for you. Here are a couple helpful tips when deciding on a tent.

Is the tent waterproof?
This is the #1 reason you find tents in the campground dumpster after a long period of rain, after purchasing a tent make sure you are clear on the "waterproof" details, most lower priced tents require a seam sealing procedure (read instructions provided with your purchase) before using the for the first time. Applying a coating of sealent (applicator or spray on) to the outside stiched seams, including around the windows, door area and any areas that are joined together.

Types of waterproof applications:

Heat Tape is applied to all inside seams, appearance as clear tape bonded to fabric stiching. This process is done at the manufacturer's location. Provides superior waterproof protection.
Welded Seams This is done with floors requiring joining material together, process involves electronically bonding joint together, guarantees 100% waterproofing.

Bathtub style floor
Assures waterproof protection by joining the floor which comes up 4" to 6" to join the sidewalls of tent creating a "bathtub" effect, keeping water from entering the floor area.

Tent Floor
oxford nylon When looking for a quality floor consider the material being used, oxford nylon is a reinforced polyester that
provides not only waterproof protection, but is a durable material that will provide protection from debris on the ground.
PVC Floor
This is the most durable and waterproof floor available on the market, made of high grade vinyl and is most often bonded with a welded seam if 2 floor pieces are required.
Double stiched tent construction provides reinforcement of seams, additional waterproof protection and durability to withstand unfavorable conditions.

Tent material
Ripstop nylonA reinforced nylon that is best described as a "checker board" in appearance which is reinforced with nylon strands with the nylon that prevents tearing, as with a nylon tent which is not reinforced.
Ripstop Poly-cotton canvas Which is the combination of durable Ripstop nylon and canvas which are blended together to provide additional weather protection and long lasting performance.

what happened to the old days of tents when they were all water prof? I grew up in Rhode Island and camped in the rain and snow and tents never leaked and back then they did not have floors made into them either. Helped to pick the right spot and use lots of leaves.

Bathtub-style floor is a must, you're right! Lots of good info here.

Yes, I know from experience that having a bathtub-type floor in your tent really helps you stay dry.
