After continued use the need to clean your sleeping bag becomes a high priority, As with any bedding you want your sleeping bag to be clean and fresh for a pleasurable camping trip. Sleeping bags that are usually down or synthetic filled, and require a certain method for cleaning.
By following the instructions provided with your sleeping bag is the recommended method, the manufacturer knows best on what is required for the particular sleeping bag.
# 1 Clean stains or spills with a sponge to prevent further penetration. Pre treat stains on synthetic-fill sleeping bags before washing.
# 2 Wash down or
synthetic fiber sleeping bags by hand or in a large commercial or or front loader washing machine. A sleeping bag can be hard on a traditional top loader machine with its rough agitation is hard on the sleeping bag and in most cases can cause damage to the sleeping bag.
# 3 Zip the bag before washing.
# 4 Wash a
down bag with a mild soap such as woolite, not laundry detergents. Do not add fabric softner or bleach. Synthetic-fill sleeping bags can be washed with regular laundry detergent, if you choose, fabric softner can be added if you choose.
# 5 Run the sleeping bag through another cycle without soap to make sure the sleeping bag is rinsed completely. Soap residues can cause the insulation to clump up and eliminate fluffiness.
# 6 Handle the bag carefully when wet. Press out the water, do not wring out. Wrap it up in a ball form and transfer it to the dryer.
# 7 Clean a down filled bag occasionally to maintain the loft or fluuiness of the down insulation. It is recommended not to dry clean a down sleeping unless authorized by the manufacturer, cleaning solvents can strip the down insulation feathers of natural oils.
# 8 Dry down sleeping bag with a clean, rubber soled tennis shoe or a couple tennis balls to fluff the down and break up clumps in the fill. make sure the down sleeping bag is completely dry before storing, may take 3-4 hours.
# 9 Synthetic-fill bags are to be dried on low heat, or can be dried outside by laying out flat on a surface.
