As I get ready to hike my first section of the AT, I'd like to hear about others experiences. The section I have picked to do is Neely Gap to Woody Gap. Has anyone been on this section? Any food suggestions? There is so much to learn outside of books!

I am looking to do part of the AT near Ashville in July. The area I have looked at is where Blood Mountain is. There appears to be a loop from Woody Gap to Neels Gap. From what I have read it seems to be a good moderate 2 day overnight. Is there anyone who has done this part of the trail.? Any other suggestions? I have to be in Ashville on the 9th of July so I only have about 4 days. thanks for any help. Tracey

Only problem was that the people we went with poopood the bear avoidance instructions that I had convinced myself were necessary. the hung their garbage right next to their tent!!? and put the bear vault right next to their tent, and scraped the food off their plates after dinner behind a rock less than 100 yards from our tents!??!? And they have backpacked before. I am having a hard time with this only because I invited them to go on the next trip also, ( I invited them at the beginning of the summer on all my reserd trips). Lordy, I researched and read and was prepared to do all my cooking 100 yards from my tent and leave all food traces at least 100 yards from my tent. Am I being paranoid or is it really necessary to take these precautions. there are about 30 - 40 bears in RMNP.

Salimah said… - wow! you went solo?! tell me more. were you scared? do you prefer solo to going with some friends? i have only done car camping but i so wanna try backpacking to a place a bit more remote, nobody seems interested in that though. so maybe a solo trip is in my future. what kind of research and precautions did you take when planning your trip?

Lisa Gallagher said… - I have never been there personally but I have heard it is beautiful, I have been told make sure to take pleanty of water and make sure to have pleanty of gas there isn't anything convient around, also on the hikes be careful for wild animals, I wish I had a more personal experience to give you, if you ever get a chanse lake powell is a nice spot to. let me know how it goes, have fun for me tooo....

I just joined, just like you! Apparently we are the site's first few members. I added an application -- "Status" -- so that we can all write general short messages to the group, kind of like Twitter.
If you want to add it too, look under "Add Applications" on your "My Page" right under your photo, then add the application "Status" (should be on the second page). Let me know if you add anything else. I'd like to know the group-type applications others add.
Some of us are also adding the ParaChat app so we can talk in real time. It's on page 6 of the applications.
Be sure to check out the groups by state or interest and join any that interest you. Also, please feel free to start any group you want, including a new state group.
