I started camping away from any campgrounds in my twenties and then especially after I took a wilderness survival class. One campground I used to camp in in NY just over the NJ border felt like I was living in Brooklyn on the weekends, only without any walls between me and the neighbors! So much for campgrounds.
It's great to know someone else who likes camping in pure wilderness. :)
