I just love it here in Idaho! I can step out of my door at any time the mountains are within walking distance from my little house right in town. It has desert areas and areas with pretty little streams and pines all within a couple of miles of each…
Yosemite...with all of the hiking that I have done, I have not gone to Yosemite. It is a dream of mine :) But I am busy exploring the mountains around the place we just moved to last year. It is in beautiful Southern Idaho and full of places to go...
Oh boy, am I getting excited! I have been out twice in the snow, but there is nothing like a walk in the spring. My eight year old granddaughter and I are already planning a trip or two into the mountains...I have a llama now to help out, so we will…
Laurene, back when I started bringing my children out in the backcountry my first husband wasn't supportive, so I did it alone. Then I continued doing it as a single mom because it helped to hold myself and my four little ones together as a…

I have moved closer to the mountains :). I am hiking in the Elkhorns and Oxfords of Southern Idaho now, and I love it!
I have taken my kids camping for over 25 years...I still do it because we still hike together from time to time. I am starting to bring my grandchildren.
I have learned that you can bring your kids anywhere into the backcountry, as long as you have…
This group is for those that camp with children. Tell us your great ideas for making camping easier and more enjoyable, as well as great places to go to and see with kids! All are welcome!:)
I did not have a chance to get out into the West desert...I will have to put that off until next year....I have not been on in a long time because I moved! I am very happy I did. We now live in a cute little house with just enough land for a few…
Brent and Kim...thanks for the trail tips... I am in the middle of moving to a new house (further out in the country...yeah!), but will be out on the trail again by the end of the month...
Matthew, I dehydrate everything! I dehydrate my garden produce: tomatoes, zucchini, squash, onions, etc. I dehydrate broccoli and mushrooms from the supermarket. I thinly slice them and dry them to the crispy point so they crumble. These are great…
Rosemary, I agree that there is something unique about it out there. Possibly the lack of people, the feel that over time little has changed... not sure. We'd explore out there a lot and came across old homesteads, graves, lots of mining stuff, critters, the beautiful wild horses... just amazing. I was actually born in Dugway, so maybe that is why it holds an extra inner charm for me. ;)
Great! It is a worthwhile book. It is a lot of history as well as maps with hiking info. It is mainly about the west desert by Delta, but West. That is soooo remote, where I truly feel away from everyone and everything. have you done the pony express trail that goes just south of Dugway Proving grounds? That is a great one to take and then just grab a turn out and hike around there (not on the army side...lol!!) There is actually a good book writing about a women who lived out there for 30 or something days with no contact with anyone. I can't remember the name of it just now, but will. I will so envious when I read it. Have you gone to Great basin National Park near Ely, NV? THat is a great one. Sorry so lengthy... hope you like the book!!
Good for you by doing your hiking the "old" way. I am not into gadgets myself, but a lot of the times we go out with our kids and just for safety of them, I felt we needed it. I personally love to just go and "be" in nature. Something so amazing and powerful being surrounded by outdoor world with not a soul insight! You can definitely find that in the west desert or southern utah, or for that matter the west!;) I have a ton of websites that each have here and there great info. I'll forward them to you since they don't do me much good out here!:( Take care!
We miss it there a lot! Texas is huge, but very little public lands... all huge ranches! We have explored a lot of areas out there. If you ever want any ideas or whatever, or just to share your experiences, I will live it through you!;0) Do you have a GPS? Key thing to have out there. Do you rock hound at all? Utah is amazing for that! We did that a lot as well. Keep me updated on your travels... I am soooooo jealous!
Rosemary,
While exploring the west desert of Utah, a good book is "Hiking, Climbing and Exploring Western Utah's Jack Watson's Ibex Country" by Michael R. Kelsey. It has a lot of history as well as maps. Be safe out there and watch for mine holes! I am jealous of your explorations! We moved from Salt Lake a year ago to Texas and we really miss all the open lands out there. We use to head out almost every weekend. ENjoy and leave an itinerary. That west desert is HUGE!!! Have fun!
The Tech Blanket from Thermarest is a great piece of gear when it comes to hammock camping. The system was meant for the ground but it works great in a hammo...
