That's so exciting that you're going to go backpacking for the first time! I'm 57 myself, so I understand! Just make sure you're in decent shape, esp. aerobically. I went camping this last weekend, and you forget how taxing that altitude thing can be.
Diane enjoy your hike it is awesome. I made my first hike at 50 as well. the overnight in the Tetons. That is my photo. bear poo everywhere but never a bear. look forward to hearing about it when you return! Tracey
That picture was taken on the AT near the Laurel Creek Shelter. The house was a little strange feeling when you went inside it. Black handprints all over the walls and ceilings both upstairs and downstairs, also on the outside of the house. I didn't stay in it very long. Kind of creepy
From Grand Lake you should drive up to the top of Trail Ridge Road visit the Visitors Center, spectacular drive and the view from the top is also unbelievably beautiful. I would recommend driving the 46 beautiful breathtaking miles along trailridge from Grand Lake to the east side of RMNP. There are several shorter hikes 3 - 5 (one way)miles you can take that will knock your socks off. The Grand Lake side has three main trails, the east inlet and the north inlet and tohahutu (sp?) going into the park. I don't hike much on the west side so sorry I can't give you real educated advice on the hiking over there. The tonahutu visitor center is the place to go for hiking information on the west side. last year my husband and I hiked to Andrews Glacier a strenuous hike to say the least and passed three couples visiting from 1000 ish elevations, and they did remarkabley well, so I wont' say that the elevation will be a factor in your ability to hike long distances. The elevation starts at 8000 feet and goes to 11 - 12000 feet and higher. God luck and Congratulations and I hope you have a blast on your honeymoon. What a beautiful place to visit. Oh yea if you do visit estes park I know of an italian resturant that is excellent! Let me know if you want some ideas for hikes on the east side. This is my stomping ground. Have hiked em all!
Thanks for the comment. that is at Cascade Canyon Grand Tetons in July of 08! snow everywhere. first time snow camping as a florida girl. jealous of colorado, one of my favorite states. So get your gear and go! lol hope you have happy camping! Tracey
