10 hours after leaving the parking lot, we reach our Crater Lake camp site next to a lovely mountain brook. Soon, we'll be ready for dinner cooked on the stove perched on tree stump in front of the tents.

The Crater Lake we backpacked into is in Colorado in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area of the Arapaho National Forest, just south of Rocky Mountain National Park. The trail head is south of Grand Lake and Lake Granby next to Monarch Lake.

Comment by Winston Walker on February 4, 2011 at 12:31pm: The first two folks to the camp site are our power hikers!!! They push ahead fast, while the rest of us just took our time and rested when needed. One member in our group was dealing with some long term respiratory issues which required us to take it easy and stop as often as required, still we were still going to take it nice and slow.

Comment by Winston Walker on February 3, 2011 at 12:49pm: After the 10 hour, 7-1/2 mile trek, we were tired and hungry. Two people in our backpack group made it to the camp site in about 5-1/2 hours, ahead to the remaining backpackers. They had time to locate and scout out the camp site before the others arrived 4-1/4 hours later.
