Anyone up for a winter snowshoe and/or winter camping trip this April. Would really love to get out for a weekend trip sometime this April. Either in Southern Cal mountains or Sequoia?

Hi Eric! Nice to hear from you again. Those sound like fun trips. I'm sure you will enoy the backcountry snow with the Boy Scout groups. Perhaps we can plan a trip for later in the spring somewhere in the Central Sierra (between you and I). Should be plenty of snow till late spring this year. Probably others on here interested as well. Cheers.

I'm going Snowshoe Backpacking in South Lake Tahoe this weekend, as well as another snow camping trip on the weekend of March 6, but these are Boy Scout Trips. I would love to do more. I live in Nor Cal (SF Bay Area) and lack time to plan.

I go snowshoe backpacking with the Boy Scouts. We go to Luther Pass outside of Meyers, in South Lake Tahoe. I love it !! (pics on my page)
Snowshoes can be rented at REI. Survivorman or Man Vs Wild had an episode that showed you how to make them from pine boughs. If you go to www.Sportsmansguide.com, they have snowshoes for about $70. A place here in Nor Cal, called Wilderness Exchange, you can buy snowshoes, polls, and a carry case for $100.

Well that sounds like a definite plan, Sandra! I will look forward to it. I have the clothes and gear for cold weather & snow.

I don't know about making snowshoes, Ryan, but you can find them for pretty cheap these days (especially off season). I got mine on clearance in spring for half-off. Checkout REI-Outlet, unless you just wanted to try making them yourself.

No permits needed unless you go into the back country, which I have never done. Don't know the regulations there. No charge for camping in the campground parking lot in the winter. (Very few people attempt it.) Once I found a picnic table that had been buried by the snow and someone had dug it out, so that was nice.
As far as getting up there, it's doable unless they have changed their protocol, but of course remember you can get snowed in -- or snowed out and unable to even get in.
Cold? 8000 feet in the Sierras in the dead of winter? Naw, not cold at all. Bring your flip flops. (j/k :) F-f-f-freezing. But as long as you dress right, you will survive it.
March-April might work, too. Actually, I was thinking about going there in the spring, when the baby animals are out.

So they do allow camping there in winter? I assume you still need permits and all that. As long as you can get up there, I'm game for that. Probably beautiful up there, though cold. Probably starts getting warmer up there in March-April which would also be fun snow camping.
