Prevention and education is the first key to keeping kids safe around campfires. I have been a pedi burn nurse for 17 years and have seen several burns that could of been prevented with a little education and awareness. Please post any stories or advice that you think will prevent a burn.
NEVER think that a campfire is out.. I have seen several burned feet and children that have fallen face first in to the simmering coals.
MAKE a CIRCLE OF SAFETY in the dirt with a stick 4 feet away from the campfire. SHOW THIS LINE TO YOUR CHILDREN. MAKE THEM WALK IT.
TEACH your children to respect the campfire.

Yes.. My dad always made us respect fire.. we were never allowed to play (as children) with the fire.. Great.. thanks for the reminder.
I used to run a summer camp, and one year I decided that on the first night we would roast marshmallows. Bad decision. The kids were all so hyped up about being at camp, they had just come out of hurry-hurry "civilization", and the marshmallow roast was a reflection of that. There were sticks waving around everywhere (in spite of my many warnings), burning sticks, and a number of burns from all the excited kids. Lesson: on the first night get them tired with an evening or afternoon hike, have a quiet campfire & maybe tell stories, then put them to bed just after dark. They will probably stay up half the night talking anyway, but at least they won't have burns from the campfire.
