I used to run a summer camp with up to 60 kids at a time, and we got out into the woods in tick country a lot.  The first time I ran the camp I had a consultant come in and help, and she told me they used to fill tube socks with half baking soda and half sulfur (get in the gardening dept).  Mix it up and put it in the sock and then dust your legs, arms, shoes, etc. using the sock.  Then afterwards I would have all kids rinse off with cool water - hair, arms, feet, and legs.  On our trips to the bush, not one kid came back with a tick.

But they still managed to get a few rolling around on the grass in the camp proper.  Can't win 'em all.

Does anyone here know about how tyo treat burns with wild plants, in the absence or shortage of regular medical supplies?

this may not be deep woods, but my understanding is that vinegar is the best thing to put on man-o-war and jelly fish stings, because it prevents further triggering of the stinging cells. I don't recall of the curing half, but if you ask someone in that kind of pain I'm sure they'll take the vinegar now... :-)

Oh and I'm going to the video now, TY sandra as I am VERY susceptible to poison ivy.

Jewel weed is a natural way to treat poison ivy and in my experience, it works pretty well. It is usually found near poison ivy. Here's a link to a video about treating poison ivy/oak/sumac with jewel weed:

With cooler weather coming on, be sure to carry anti-hypothermia stuff in your car. Survival blankets are great, but survival bags and blizzard bags are even better.
I've been the first person on the scene of a few accidents, so having something to cover the victim(s) with was a great thing. Also, having a basic road first aid kit helps tremendously. If you don't already have a road emergency kit in your car, I'd recommend you put one together.

I've used mud many times for itches and stings and it works great. The idea of using duct tape for cactus needles is a new one -- and a great idea. I wonder if it would work for porcupine quills just as well.

Another use for duct tape- removing cactus needles from the skin! Our son brushed up against one and have several dozen little spines in his arm so we grabbed a piece and stuck it to him, pushed lightly to make sure it adhered then pulled! It removed them easily and alot at once.

Bug bites/stings- make a mud paste with dirt and water then apply to the bite or sting- helps relieve the itching and pain

Cool idea, Jim... but have you ever tried mixing water and charcoal? I just make a mess, and a lumpy mess at that. Will have to try this one out, though.
Btw, don't mix water with the white ashes in your fire, because that creates lye.

Thermarest Tech Blanket, Good for Hammock Camping???

The Tech Blanket from Thermarest is a great piece of gear when it comes to hammock camping. The system was meant for the ground but it works great in a hammo...
