Tom F. mentioned geocaching in a comment in the "Off the beaten path" discussion so I thought I would start a seprate discussion on geocaching.

What are some of your experiences with geocaching and where are some good places to go in relation to length of trips, time needed and difficulty.

We have enjoyed many of the State parks on the beaten Path here in central Texas, (i.e. Enchanted Rock, Pedernales Falls, Garner State Park, and Bastrop State park are all great for geocaching, especially for folks new to the activity.
Do you belong to a group or just do it on your own?
I had never heard of geocaching until I joined this group but it sounds like alot of fun, I think im going to invest in my own GPS so I can get started on this with my son
My Family loves to Geocach on camping trips. Fun for kids and adults. Just go to www.ceocaching.com and punch in a zip code, town or park and several sites will show up. It is like treasure hunting for the kids. Good to do while hiking. Just punch in the numbers on a hand held GPS and go. I was wondering if anyone has tried to Geocach in any areas effected by hurrican Ike. I am thinking most of the Cashes are lost or moved???
the most fun i had caching was inks lake...lots and lots of caches that will keep you busy for the whole day. i use the iphone app to get me in the area, but allot of times i have to fire up the garmin for the last stretch.
We went camping at Lake Bardwell near Ennis, TX and did some geocaching while we were there. There are a lot of caches in the Ennis area that are easy to find. Doing these made an excellent day if you are tired of the lake or just want something else to do.
While we aren't huge into geocaching... not sure why since it is great fun, but the great thing about the website is that it takes you to some really great and amazing places. While in Utah, we found a place with a cache and when we were driving up a mountain lion went running down the road in front of us and then cut out in the opposite direction. Needless to say, we kept the kids near us and saw the amazing scenery. Fun stuff!
Oh and the website is www.geocaching.com

Just to let everyone know, there is a new Geocaching group at http://campersindex.ning.com/group/geocaching. Drop by and join us!
Ask other geocachers about what is the best GPS to buy. I bought a top of the line geocaching GPS before hearing here about a less expensive but totally OK GPS. So there are all kinds, all different prices.

We are going to Cedar Hill SP to camp and do some geocaching the end of this month. From the looks of the map on geocaching.com there should be plenty of caches there to keep us busy for awhile!
We just got a GPS and found our first Cache on the 4th of July. My son (13) seemed to think we were silly but the closer we got the more exited he was! Now he wants to go all the time.
