Gotta know what part of the states you are speaking from before we can help with that one! :)
Assata,
It depends on where you live or where you are planning to go. If I had my choice anywhere in the country? Somewhere in the Tetons or Denali...or maybe on the beach in St. John's?
How about you? Where do you live or what area would you like to visit?
Jeff
If you have never camped in nearby National Parks, by all means start there. State Parks are great, too. Camping in Yosemite and Sequoia are two must-dos at least once in your life. How much camping have you done?
Assata, each state has state and national park areas set aside for both RV and tent camping. All of these are good, some are better, some are more rustic and others have more amenities like showers (a favorite of tent campers). Good luck with your search.
Hi Assata!
I like to frequent campgrounds that have a set aside area for tenters better than camping next to RVs. For instance in the William Heise, San Diego County Campground, the tent sites have a level sandy pad to pitch the tent on and each site is separated from the other by trees and foliage, granting a better esthetic and a degree of privacy. The county reservation site is kind of cool too in that a photo of each site is available form the campground map. If you go to the Reserve America website you can select for tent sites in the state or area you wish to camp in, but I don't think you will find a photo of every indivdual site. That may be too much data for the servers to hold at RA. Primative or yellow post sites in the forest service areas are my next favorite, though some times they are first come first served and are often dry camping. But if you don't mind bringing your own porta-potty and drinking water, you can have more solitude than in a developed campground. I hope this helps you find tent sites in the USA. I'm pretty clueless about other parts of the world. I would love to tent camp in Europe some day, and I have friends that travel to Mexico to camp but I really don't know how they find the best sites there. Happy Camping!
I love camping in the mountains. San Diego, CA has awsome campsites. Lake Morena is the place for camping. Big enough area to put up your tents. I've love the hiking trails, fishing, or just walking around the camp sites. Another great place to camp is McGrath State Beach in Oxnard, CA. So many trees to help with the sun and the beach isn't fair. Also is a great place is El Capitan State Beach (outside of Santa Barbara). We were there camping with a group of women and we had a great time there. Nice bike trails, hike trail to the ocean.
There is a wonderulf place in southwest Oklahoma...The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. It is federal land with loads of wildlife and excellent camping facilities. We go there at least twice a year.

I grew up close to the Wichita's in Quanah, TX. Haven't been there in years. But I remember it being a beautiful place. Has it fared well?

Clarence, I grew up near Quanah, TX. I go to the Wichita Mtns. often, there is so much to explore, I always see something new whenever I go. Assata, check your state and federal parks, they are a great place to start!
