When our family first came to Colorado, we visited a couple of stae parks, and have since visited a third quite frequently.

Trinidad State Park, in Trinidad, Colorado, (just inside the state line from New Mexico), was the first park we visited. Unfortunatly I have few photos, but it was a very nice park. There were a number of trails that were pretty short for those not wanting to take a 5 mile hike, and there are trails that can take you 5 miles if that is what you want to do.

The scenery is very nice, but as we travel north up I-25, we find even nicer views, and rock formations...

Lathrop State Park in Walsenburg, Colorado, (about 100 miles from Trinidad), proved to be a beautiful park, with miles and miles and miles of hiking trails, many taking you up 500+ feet hills! The views from atop Hog Back Ridge are absolutely fabulous as you can see in the photo below.

On up the road about 2 hours on I-25 North, then another 40 minutes or so up 24 West, to 67 South, a journy into the mountains and into Divide Colorado finds us at Mueller State Park. Mueller is our favorite of the three parks we have been to so far. Mueller has over 50 miles of hiking trails and is one of the most beautiful place we have visited in Colorado!

Mueller has views that are absolutely breath taking, as you can see in the last photo below of Sentry point, (part of Pikes Peak), and the wildlife is in abundance too! Mueller is a nature photographers dream come true! There are bears, cougar, fox, deer, elk, moose, all sorts of birds, lizards, prairie dogs, and so many more wild animals. It is just awesome at Mueller State Park.

Camping at all of these state parks was very enjoyable, although we have not camped in Mueller yet. We did visit the Mueller campground, and it is beautiful. Each spot is secluded from the next, with lots of woods, and space to roam, and awesome views. We would have to say Mueller is our fav for camping too. Trinidad and Lathrop, they are nice too, but not as roomy, or secluded as Mueller. Trinidad has free showers, Lathrop and Mueller both have pay showers though. If you are in an RV it don't matter much, but for tenters it can get costly if you like a nice long shower.

All in all we really enjoyed our stay at all three parks, and will stay again if in the area.

Do you know if you're allowed to take dogs on any of the trails in any of the parks you've been too?
Hi Laurene,

Yes you can take dogs on some of the trails. Trinidad and Lathrop you can take dogs on the trails, but in Mueller they cannot be out of the designated area for pets. This is because Mueller is deep in wildlife territory. There are lots of bears, cougars, elk, moose, etc. Cheyene Canyon State Park has this rule also, as do a few others inb the mountainous areas.

Hope this helps,
Carmella
