where campers connect + share
Group trips and families are often too much for me in the Wilderness. I will forego the paved camp sites and toilets for utter & awesome SILENCE. I prefer to camp alone or with one other person.
A recent experience regarding an Outdoor Club (aka ODC / informal groups that camp often), but too many personalities, often novice, smokers, drinkers, partiers, city folk, outdoorsy strangers wanting to socialize. I just wanna HIKE, quit talking please.
My road trips are often spontaneous, letting the weather patterns and my trusty camera steer me down the dirt road to my next adventure. So, my question to you is....
DO YOU ever talk to other SOLO campers you might see?
Like I am sure the backpackers might - cuz you haven't seen a person for days maybe. But I car camp outside of developed Campground -- and try to avoid all human contact if possible. I might wave or smile at someone in passing, but rarely do I approach any person in the wild, or try to make small talk with anyone.
WHAT are YOUR thoughts ?
What are some easy & fun ways to get rid of the 'chatties'?

Permalink Reply by WildernessWillie on December 16, 2010 at 7:55am I do a lot of solo camping, but most of mine is at state parks, not many wilderness area in Illinois. I do from time to time talk to other campers when I solo camp, but for the most part I keep to myself when camping solo. When I'm somewhere along the trail (and don't want to talk to anyone) and I see or hear them coming I just get off the trail and let them pass by when possible. Like you when I'm outdoors I want to enjoy the outdoors and can do without the other junk that novice campers do. I'm not into the party, smoking, drinking. I just want to enjoy the peace and quite. As far as getting rid of chatties, have a book nearby and when you see them coming start reading.
