Hi all!! Thought I'd start this conversation to meet/greet and see first off who's got what and the fun that goes with it...

I just jumped into the popup world last year in this great economy of ours by aquiring a 1990 Coleman Roanoke with extra holes (thankfully all patched) and no air unless you unzip the windows...pull with a 1999 Ford Expedition. Paid $600 for the popup and have camped three times already, love it...although a bit cramped was well worth it...will attach a pic or two later...
Thanks!!

We have a 2 year old Starcraft that literally has all of the comforts of home. It even has a standup shower in it although we have never used it. but it does have gas stove, oven and micro wave. We love having most of the comforts of home but also like being able to open all of the sides and get a constant breeze. I pull it behind a 1999 Yukon 4X4. I keep thinking I may trade the Yukon in on a new one but it only has 83K miles and still runs like new.
I'm interested in buying a pop-up some day. What are the pros and cons of owning one? And how do they do in a downpour rainstorm?
We have a Starcraft that seals up very nice. We have been in some pretty heavy rain and the camper hasn't leaker yet. I should add that is a new one. We have had it for two years. You just have to be careful during setup and make sure everything is in order. We wouldn't have anyting else. Our camper also has an additional room we can zip on the front of it and also seal up. I would have to say the main con is cooling it down in hot weather. We have a factory installed air conditioner unit that I have only used once and it didn't help hardly at all. The heater on the other hand does keep it warm inside. Of course, we havn't camped in ice cold conditions.

Last year we traded in our good old Colman Pop-up on a modern new RV with all the nice bells and whistles. Although it is nice to have all the up grades and room. WE MISS OUR POP-UP. The kids keep talking about it. "Remember when in the pop-up".... Pop ups are so easy to store and pull. We used a Ford Explorer and a Ford F150. We stored it right in our garage. Now with the larger RV we have to pay for storage. Camping in a pop-up seems to keep you closer to nature and the outside than the RV. It is nice to open it up and have a breeze come in. Ours was very water proof in a downpour. (Took a hail storm well one time too) But it did not take the wind very well. Lots of wind noise. Once in a summer storm on Inks Lake in Texas the wind was so bad that it bent the frame. That was a long night. Bad storm......All the tents left the next morming and the RV's all had hail damage. But not the pop-up. It took the weather better than any one at the park.
Robert and Rita -- it may be an inconsequential question, but what kind of mileage do you/did you get? (with the pop-up)
We are on our third pop-up camper. Love them! Never have had a problem in the rain, and we have been in some pretty good ones. You just want to make sure to get it dry before putting it down. If you cant avoid it then make sure to put it up as soon as you can and get it dried out.

We have a 2007 Yuma(Fleetwood/Coleman)and we pull it with our 2006 Jeep Unlimited Wrangler. We are trying to camp every GA state park(which will be very difficult if this recession closes any of them :( ). We've been at it for 3 years now and doing very well except that we can't help but go back to some of our favorites at least 2 or 3 times!
I have the big V8 in my Yukon so I only get about 15MPG normally. When pulling the camper, it only drops a couple of miles average. So, to me it's worth it. Most of the places we go to in Arizona are in the mountains so I can turn off the AC and that helps a lot.

We havee been camping in our 99 Niagra since 2002, we love it, my two children talk about it non stop, we have been thinking about jumping up to a travel trialer because we take one of the family dogs with us, however the pop up story's are just too good. we may do it but we are looking at a 2010 niagra, they have really come a long way, we pull with a 99 Expedition and gone coast to coast three times and a 04 Expedition, that has not left colorado yet, but will be going to sandiago in July both get between 15.5 and 17 mpg depening on mountian terrain

Welcome to our group. I have talked to people who have made the jump from popups to haulers and say they wish they had their popups back. One person told me they have never been able to feel comfortable in their toy hauler. I've never been in one so I can't agree or disagree with the statement. I just know that my wife and I love our popup because it makes us feel like we are tent camping with more comfort.
