Have you ever camped not in a campground? You can pull off the road in a National Forest, go down a dirt road, find a spot and camp. I do it all the time. In a National Forest it's legal, but not in a National Park. You might need a campfire permit, that's all.
I love camping that way -- no people, plenty of space, peace & quiet. The only "problems" you run into are water (bring your own) and toilet facilities or lack thereof. Also, be sure to bring plenty of garbage bags. Msg me if you want more info.
Looking for a good spot to spend a few days somewhere near Banner Elk in early August. I like nice, quiet camps, with plenty of space, trees, etc. between the spots. Really do not like campgrounds that "pack 'em in" like sardines to make more money with less nature enjoyment for the campers.
