I never got that far north when I lived back East. I camped in the Bear Mt./Harrington area a lot then on up into the Catskills some. Sure wish I had gone up around the lakes and camped some.
Hi there my favorite camping area in New York is in the central part or the Finger Lakes. Beautiful area to camp with beautiful State Parks. In the Syracuse area, you have beautiful Green Lakes state park with two lakes, wooded area camp sites and a lot of hiking. In Ithaca area, there are quite a few, Taughannock Falls, Buttermilk Falls, and of course Robert Treman State park. This is on the southern end of Cayuga Lake. AT the north end of Cayuga Lake is beautiful Cayuga Lake State park, divided into 2 large campgrounds, on beautiful Cayuga Lake, then on Seneca Lake there is Sampson State park and at the south end of Seneca Lake there is our personal favorite Watkins Glen State Park. The beauty of the camping around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake is the natural waterfalls, and glens there along with one of NY states best kept secrets the wineries. So if it is rainy just hop in your car and tour the region.
Hi all - anyone do any great camping this year? I heard of a place I think in Maine that you can camp at that is the furthest point east in the US. People apparently camp there for New Years to be among the first Americans to welcome in the New Year. Anyone know of the name of this place?
I practically lived in Harriman for some time. Loved camping there, except on holiday weekends in the summer, when people who didn't know how to camp came up from NYC with their boomboxes. Usually those weekends, I left.
Hi Bill, where in the Gunks did you camp? The spots I've camped in NY are, Harriman SP, Lake Cayuga SP and Mills-Norie SP (where I saw a Piliated Woodpecker for the first and only time).
The Tech Blanket from Thermarest is a great piece of gear when it comes to hammock camping. The system was meant for the ground but it works great in a hammo...
