Just an FYI, Yosemite has sites available for May 1-5, 2011, in Upper Pines.  Apparently, they cancelled some road work they were going to do in the campground.

I have lived in Nevada since 1985 and have explored much of what there is to offer within a days car ride away from the city in any direction.  Because of the many fires that have occurred over the last few years, beautiful off road and out of the way places have literally been destroyed.  Unfortunately, they will not regenerate and become the sights that we photographed while camping there, in my lifetime.  Future generations will have gorgeous vistas with new growth to enjoy.  I look forward to connecting with Nevada campers that can share their stories about places that they enjoyed and even those that might warn me of what to expect in places that they did NOT enjoy.

I just started planning a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP's. We're leaving from the SF Bay Area and I'm trying to map a route and I don't want to drive all that way without doing any sightseeing on the way (We're not necessarily taking a direct route. The northwest is up for grabs.) For anyone who has traveled in the northwest...any recommendations on where to stop or what to see? Thank you!

Sandy: Mt Charleston (there are 3 campgrounds up there, including one with full hook ups, but is very hard to get into), Valley of Fire SP and there is a small campground that you turn into about 1 mile before Red Rock Conservation Area (it is seasonal, though, and I'm sorry that I can't remember the name of it). I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones off of the top of my head.

It can be pretty cold up at Mt Charleston in October at night time. Valley of Fire is awesome in the fall - we usually go every year in November, though. Have you been to Cathedral Gorge SP? It's outside of Panaca and is one of the cleanest campgrounds we have ever stayed in. We go there every year in September with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society.

October is fantastic for the weather. We didn't camp in Mt Charleston although we knew people who liked it. It seems there was an issue up there for campfires. I need that for my camping experience.

Kathy, try Cave Lake in Ely. We lived in Las Vegas for 6 years and it was a fav of ours. They have a wonderful clean campground in a beautiful setting...hot shower, clean restrooms and great fishing. South of Ely, can't remember exacty how far, is Sunnyside which is a more rustic setting. Great trout fishing there also. Hope you can catch up with these camping places...we surely enjoyed them.

I've lived in NV for 39 years and we've camped many places here. I agree, Cave Lake is a hidden little jewel, we love it. Lamoille Canyon outside of Elko is one of our absolute favorite places. Rye patch is close to us so for 3 days or shorter that's where we head, the lower camp ground by the river is nicest. Desert Creek is a pretty little canyon not too far from Smith Valley. Wild Horse has a pretty camp ground up on the hill in the quakies, I don't care for the one by the lake, no trees and too much wind! The camp ground on the river there is nice too. Have fun camping fellow Nevadans!

Cave Lake is a great place to camp. We've only camped there once but it was a lot of fun. Clean campground and beautiful country. What more could you want?

Thermarest Tech Blanket, Good for Hammock Camping???

The Tech Blanket from Thermarest is a great piece of gear when it comes to hammock camping. The system was meant for the ground but it works great in a hammo...
