I just started planning a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP's. We're leaving from the SF Bay Area and I'm trying to map a route and I don't want to drive all that way without doing any sightseeing on the way (We're not necessarily taking a direct route. The northwest is up for grabs.) For anyone who has traveled in the northwest...any recommendations on where to stop or what to see? Thank you!

There hasn't been much sun in the Gallatin Valley this winter. That is probably why there is a lot of talk about going camping. While the snow pack is a little low this year, it will still be a while before we can get into the mountains. I think we'll try to get over on the Madison near Beartrap as early as possible. We won't have to worry about the dogs and snakes.

depending on the weather, it won't be too long 'til we can uncover the 5er and get ready for being in the woods and warm at the same time.

We are camping three separate days in Montana on our road trip next week...Hell Creek State Park, Glacier National, and Missouri Headwaters. Any recommendations of things to do or see in either Hell Creek or Missouri Headwaters?

Hi all, I live 30 mins from Glacier National Park. Love love love that place!!
Last year we did the Avalanche Lake hike and oh my gosh our jaws dropped open when we got there. BEAUTIFUL!!! You go to Avalanche Creek Picnic Area and start from there. Well worth it :)

Thanks Brenda! We don't leave until Sept 7th. Its our annual all-girls hiking trip. It'll be great! Thanks for the info!

Heather, there are several hiking trails that can be done even as a family. One that is very popular is the Lake McDonald Trail. I believe you catch it where both the American and Canadian flags fly at the English chalet there. It's been a while since I've been so my memory may have slipped a bit. However, this takes you to spectacular views and goats wander all over up there. The wildflowers are amazing, especially early August. Another trail is the St. Mary Valley trail near the Going to the Sun road. It's a loop and is beautiful. Another trail that is more of an overnight or two nighter and a bit more strenuous is the Many Glacier Trail. I'm not sure I would take kids on this one under 10. You can hike in and stay at the Many Glacier Hotel and the Granite Park Chalet if you plan the trip right. Go to www.nps/glac for more information on the trails. It would also be good to check out the trail conditions before you go. Hope you got the information in time. I've been really busy otherwise I would have responded to your question sooner. Hope you have a great trip. When are you planning on going again? Maybe you already are there or have been.

Does anyone in the Billings or surrounding areas have any ideas for any good campsites around The Northeast or North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park? Other comments from anyone else are also welcomed.

I am partial to the trails around Red Lodge, in the Beartooths, for hiking, to the upper basin. One follows a brook all the way to cool your dogs in, but it is never too hot, and in winter it is awesome, with the ice formations on the brook as it cascades.
