Hi Mike, You lived in Pearl City?  I have cousins that were raised there, one of them lives in the Palisades now.  There are some beautiful views from up there!

I also lived on Oahu and did a lot of hiking on the island.  One of my favorite places to hang out was the pools you can hike down to from Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail.  It was never crowded, at least not when I lived there.

I lived in Hawaii for five years, on the island of Oahu.  We went camping many times.  I also went back packing there on a trail that was behind my house in Pearl City.

I really enjoy following @ Pu'ukohola NPS on twitter...

They give great information not only on National Parks in Hawaii, but all over the US and its territories. (They also have a FB page.)

I also follow @HaleakalaNPS...

Ah, cool. Still and all, I would love to camp there. It would be such a different experience from the regular touristy thing. I have never been to Hawaii and would love to go. Living on the West Coast, the air fare is OK. When I lived back East, people would more likely go to the Bahamas/Caribbean for vacations. There's a great campground on St. John (no passport needed) - primitive cabins or I think some beach camping. St. John is a nature lovers' paradise. Another place I would love to go. You got me dreamin', Eric!

You can rent Cabins inside Hale'akela Crater on Maui. You have to hike into the volcano crater to access the cabins-- bring your own sheets.
There are lots of hiking trails, but recommend a "guide" because many locals have crops, and you don't want to get caught "off trail". When I said before, "less than 1 per island", I meant some islands had none, some have 3.

Plus I found some backpacking and hiking info at http://www.backpacker.com/destinations/category/147.

Wow, did not know that. But after a little looking around I did find a couple of sites that talked about Hawaiian camping -- how limited it is I don't really know. The sites are http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/camping, http://www.alternative-hawaii.com/accom/dxcc.htm, plus the National Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, State Forest Reserves, and lots more I found. Wonderful! I guess it has changed. What a shame if we couldn't camp there. Wouldn't that be a great trip, to go camping in Hawaii for about a month?

When I lived in Hawaii, I understood that it was mostly illegal to camp, with a few exceptions:
1) If you were night fishing, you were allowed to "nap in a tent while waiting for a bite on your line"
2) Private property with owner permission
3) Certain designated areas (less than 1 per island)
I don't know if this information that was given to me then (80's) is true today.
When I lived in Maui, the place was Makena Beach, south of Wailea. There was a "Tent City". People lived there for a few years until they turned it into a State Park (no camping allowed)

Thermarest Tech Blanket, Good for Hammock Camping???

The Tech Blanket from Thermarest is a great piece of gear when it comes to hammock camping. The system was meant for the ground but it works great in a hammo...
