Besides the state parks, also try the Army Corps of Engineer campgrounds. Very well kept and maintained. Always along the lakes. They are beautiful and inexpensive.
Also, if you are going to Gatlinburg (and particularly if you have children) you must camp at Crazy Horse (Adventure Bound) campground. It has been our favorite place for 8 years since we found it. And, everyone we have introduced to it has loved it. It is 12 miles east of Gatlinburg directly across the highway from Smoky Mountain National Park and has a mountain stream running through it. They also have a stocked pond for fishing, a nice large, well kept pool, and a 500 foot waterslide!!! On weekends they have a "Jack Tales Theater" where the kids can come and be part of a play featuring an old Smoky Mountain folk tale. (Check it out on facebook - look up Jack Tales Smoky Mountain Theater.) They also have many crafts and other activities. It can get full, so book early. But, the sites are good size, so even when it's full you will still have a great experience.

HOT camping weekend at Hard Labor Creek! Anybody know if the parks in North Ga. are measurably cooler in the summer? Meanwhile, my hubby is determined to rig an a/c unit onto this OLD tent trailer!

Hello in GA., I plan to be in GA. in Sept. visiting my kids and doing some trout fishing. I lived in Ga most of my life, but the past few years have gotten rabbit in my feet. I love to travel and the USA is the best of the best. Have a blessed summer.
by the way, We have a daughter in CA...moved from San Fran to Emeryville just last year. I wish she would consider Atlanta but being an artist, she says, "no way"! Our first trip out there was 2 summers ago.
We are headed to Vogel tomorrow for the weekend. That's a real pretty one! We did not like Moccasin Creek. Nicely kept but way too crowded and way way too snooty for us and our little popup! We will be staying at Unicoi outside Helen for a week in August. First chance to get in there but we've driven through and it also looks great! For Fall pick Watson Mill, so pretty there!
note to Debra Summers....similar camping goals here...just me & hubby & whichever dog comes along! Which state parks have you liked or not liked, and why?
Hello all...just found this site via fb & decided to join. We camped in an old "tent-on-wheels" pop-up when the kids were growing upin CA., and now it's just the two of us ...we had left the other one in CA and found another bare-bones pop-up here, so we've started again! We've been to 3 state parks camping since last month...trying to find a favorite campground. Being on the lake at Ft Yargo was nice. Any advice about staying cool in the summer? We may try North Ga...maybe Black Rock will be cooler in July!
The Tech Blanket from Thermarest is a great piece of gear when it comes to hammock camping. The system was meant for the ground but it works great in a hammo...
