I just noticed a new photo called "Free camping near Downieville, CA" - if anyone is interested - http://camper-share.com/photo/free-camping-near-downieville?context....

Please share with this group places you have camped that were free (or nearly so).  I've camped free near Soda Lake, which is just west of Maricopa, CA.  Spring, fall, and winter are best.  Lots of antelope in wild herds there.

Thanks, Laurene.  Always good to know.

I think freecampgrounds.com is associated with the people that wrote the book that is the logo of this group. Great book, btw.

We usually boondock, but a free campground is good to find too.

Okay...I found it! check out www.harvesthosts.com
for $20.00 a year owners of Motorhomes, 5th wheels and travel trailers can stay one 24 hour period at a number of farms and wineries throughout the US for free! They'd like you to visit their facility and spend some money of course. This is a brand new enterprise so I'm not sure how many are particpating yet, but it's sure worth checking out and it beats Wally World's parking lot!

Interestingly enough there is a place called FreeCampgrounds.com it has an interactive map where you click on a state and it lists campground that are free or close to free. Many of the listings are from 2003 to 2005, but they're at least worth checking out! I'd also found a web based group that could be joined for about $20 a year to get listings of farms and vinyards that allow RVer's to dry camp over night for free, but list the URL! A great source seems to be www.newrver.com

I started a group on Living Outdoors Full Time at http://www.campersindex.com/group/livingoutside -- for tenters, RV'ers or whatever. Some of you might be interested in it. If you are actually living in or have ever lived in a tent or RV full time, please join the group.

When I lived back East, the free camping situation was way different than out West here. Back East practically everything was fenced. I couldn't easily find a place to just pull over and camp. The only exception was maybe the Pine Barrens in places, or if you took a drive to Pennsylvania maybe.
Out West here there are virtually limitless free camping areas.
In Southern California, there is a place called Slab City where hundreds if not thousands of people camp over the wintertime. They have it even sort of set up like a city, too, with a library and other city amenities. Lots of free spirits there.

In National Forests you can pretty much camp anywhere. But there are also established campgrounds where you can camp for free.

Thermarest Tech Blanket, Good for Hammock Camping???

The Tech Blanket from Thermarest is a great piece of gear when it comes to hammock camping. The system was meant for the ground but it works great in a hammo...
