@Sandra, what's below primitive? it is an area of high desert, marked off by surrounding mountains and a cliff face down to more desert. other than that desert with as a say a "Part day creek/trickle of water. inches deep, inches wide." @SE- look on a topographical map of the area, maybe a map of the national park there in Big Bear.

SE, I wouldn't camp at Wind Wolves much later than May - it just gets too hot out there.  April and maybe on into May should be nice because the wildflowers will be blooming all over the place out there!

Much of the area is protected... you can take a 2 mile hike to a natural spring... lots of hawks and birds on the way, and an occasional Condor.

I saw a bobcat at Wind Wolves once and a number of coyotes not far from the campground area...

Tom, the Horsetheif Flat area sounds interesting. That is some beautiful country there. I will be in Big Bear later this year and hope to check that out for sure.

tom - that location sounds interesting... is it a regular campground or a primitive area?

SE - I've camped in all the places you mention... in fact, I'm thinking about getting out to Soda Lake again before it gets too hot.

One neat semi-arid area to go to is the Wind Wolves Preserve between I-5 and Maricopa.  You practically have to know it's there - but it's a wonderful cut of a canyon with a stream & lots of wildlife, nice campground.  Very much worth a trip, but I think they are open for camping only on the weekends.  I think they may want you to call first, not sure.

I just posted my photos from my camping trip to Red Rock Canyon State Park, Ca... I had such a great time!!!  It was very cold at night & windy the first day, but otherwise the weather was absolutely perfect.

Neat places in CA to camp in desert. I camped in Joshua Tree, Anza Borrego and Selby Campground near Soda Lake in early October. Beautiful areas and more solitude that time of year. Loved all the sculptures in Borrego Springs!

I used to do some "desert camping" in the san bernadino national forest, at a location called. "Horse thief flats" you'd need at least a 2 wheel drive and preferably a 4 wheel drive, just above the high desert, with a creek that is running at sun up but drys by about noon, then runs again by morning.

I've camped in Anza Borrego, Death Valley, various places in Arizona, Joshua Tree, and a semi-arid place near Soda Lake, Ca. (just west of Maricopa, Ca).  I love the stars!!!  You can't see stars anywhere else like you can in the desert.  And I love listening to the yaps and howls of coyotes at night, too. :)
