Half Moon campground - just outside of Leadville, CO. No fees, has nothing to offer besides beautiful views, great trails, cool crisp mornings, wildlife, and a great weekend. I like it because it has an offroad 4-wheel only portion that I always take my car on to get to the best camp sites.

We like to camp at the KOA in GOuld Colorado because we have four wheelers and you can drive right out of the camp site. They closed the forest this year due to the beetle kill though.

Our fav is Sugarloafin' Campground, also in Leadville. We use it as a base camp to hike and explore Independence Pass. This campground is just before Tourquois Lake. From Denver take I-70 west until the Leadville exit and continue on this highway until you reach Leadville. Follow the signs to downtown and follow highway 24 all the way through downtown. A half mile after downtown turn right at the ranger station and follow this road about 3 miles. Sugarloafin is on the right or if you are going to Tourquois Lake, go a quarter of a mile further. There is more than enough primitive camping at the lake. Sugarloafin is developed with showers and other facilities for about $28.00 a night. Definately check out Leadville if you haven't in awhile, there are several great restaurants including some of the best pizza in the mountains at High Mountain Pies. Weeks can be spent exploring Independence pass and there is some pretty great camping there particularly at Weller campground where the campsites are among a large aspen grove.

My favorite is Rampart Range. My buddy and I have an established campsite that we can get to on a Friday afternoon after work. We stay until Sunday morning and can make it home in time for the early football games. This is not the overall best spot by any means except convenience. Where we camp we see Pikes Peak to the south, about 150 miles of mountains to the west, Mount Evans to the north and Devils Head to the east. There is a creek just down the hill. We're out beyond the bikes so it's quiet. Theres plenty of wildlife and not just from drinken tequila.

Hi there, I'm new to the group and would like to continue this discussion NEW for 2011!  We just purchased our new travel trailer and we'd love suggestions for weekender trips in Colorado.  We do have a tyke so we're not ready for the all-natural camping just yet . . . I think we'd love a place that has some amenities, perhaps a playground, and lots to do for short hikes and sightseeing. Suggestions?  We live in Colorado Springs, by the way. Thanks!

I've heard great things about Mueller State Park but haven't been there yet with my kids - that's on the calendar for this summer though. We really enjoy a campground just north of 285 before you get to Guanella Pass.  The campground is called Geneva Park - we like the large campsites.  Only a vault toilet, but close enough to JEfferson to grab ice-cream or stop at Ace Hardware for firewood or forgotten items.
