Yup, I know what you mean.  There's a KOA not far from my town - perfect for a quick getaway.  In general, they do tend to cater to kids and families.  But anyone is welcome.

This might be old news to some of you but we have a local KOA that we've been going to recently, just to get out of the house.  Wow!  This one is really kid friendly!  They have a petting zoo, "jumping pillow," pool and a variety of additional activities including planned activities.  (I haven't been to a KOA since I was a small child, 35+ years ago and this is all new to me.)  This KOA isn't out "in nature" but when we can't get out of the city, "farm country" is a good substitute.  We just went this past weekend with 3 other families and what a great time we all had!  I feel like I've found one of family camping's best kept secrets.  We prefer camping further out of the city in state and federal campgrounds, but what a great alternative when those options are not available!

What you take tent camping somewhat depends on the level of comfort you want.  I've tent-camped for nearly 40 years as an adult and have slept on the ground, on an air mattress (the cheap ones leak), on a sleeping pad, on a cot, and on one of those full or queen-sized mattresses that are more like a regular bed mattress only you fill them with air.

Currently I sleep on a good 1" air mattress on top of an extra wide cot.  I think I sleep better there than in my own bed at home.

What I'll do is create a discussion in the Tent Camping group that covers what you should bring on a tent campout.

Remember, you can cram your car full and pull a U Haul full of stuff - or you can think it through and take just what you'll really need.

Check out my post later today or tomorrow in the tent campers group at http://www.campers-index.com/group/tentcampers.

Sandra Essary also created a blog called "camping checklist."  She has a really nice list that she created.  Looks a little more streamlined than the one I gave you.  Here's the link to the blog.

Read the comments, there are some good additions to her list.

We used to tent camp but haven't for a while, though Big Sur has a nice list that I used when we first started going out. Here's the link.

One thing I noticed that wasn't on the list was wash tubs.  We always had a wash and rinse tub for doing dishes.

I hope this is a good start.

We are going to Gooseberry Falls state park in MN. Its along the north shore of Supior Lake. We are bringing our three oldest kids with (6 1/2, 12 and 13 3/4) but leaving our two little ones (9 months and 2 1/2) home with gramma and grampa. It would be too much hiking for them two. I'm a little nervous about our 6 1/2 yr old with us for the first time hiking. She's not much of a hiker. Any Ideas on how to keep her mind off the fact that she's walking sooooooo far? (it's not that far) Perhaps make it like a scavnger hunt?

Thermarest Tech Blanket, Good for Hammock Camping???

The Tech Blanket from Thermarest is a great piece of gear when it comes to hammock camping. The system was meant for the ground but it works great in a hammo...
