What you take tent camping somewhat depends on the level of comfort you want. I've tent-camped for nearly 40 years as an adult and have slept on the ground, on an air mattress (the cheap ones leak), on a sleeping pad, on a cot, and on one of those full or queen-sized mattresses that are more like a regular bed mattress only you fill them with air.
Currently I sleep on a good 1" air mattress on top of an extra wide cot. I think I sleep better there than in my own bed at home.
What I'll do is create a discussion in the Tent Camping group that covers what you should bring on a tent campout.
Remember, you can cram your car full and pull a U Haul full of stuff - or you can think it through and take just what you'll really need.
Check out my post later today or tomorrow in the tent campers group at http://www.campers-index.com/group/tentcampers.
Sandra Essary also created a blog called "camping checklist." She has a really nice list that she created. Looks a little more streamlined than the one I gave you. Here's the link to the blog.

Read the comments, there are some good additions to her list.
We used to tent camp but haven't for a while, though Big Sur has a nice list that I used when we first started going out. Here's the link.

One thing I noticed that wasn't on the list was wash tubs. We always had a wash and rinse tub for doing dishes.
I hope this is a good start.
