That's basically why I like camping in NF myself - less people, more privacy, cheaper, and the campgrounds are generally just fine.

Here in California, with the state budget just about bankrupt, they have just about doubled the fees in state parks, so it makes it almost prohibitive to camp there.  Too bad, because there are some great state parks along the beach.  But NF's suit me just fine, as long as I can get to them.  In the winter a lot of the roads aren't plowed in the mountains.

I am a big fan of NF camping.. been going to the Chattahoochee NF for 30 years and it's my favorite - also nice that it's only about an hour away. Not as many planned activities and facilities as a NP, but lots more privacy and remoteness. Campsites in the rec areas are typically $8-12 a night, with nice separation and plenty of room. Some have water taps scattered around the campground. All sites have a table, fire ring, lantern hook, gravel pad, and some also have a park style grill.

Hi all - anyone do any great camping this year?  I heard of a place I think in Maine that you can camp at that is the furthest point east in the US.  People apparently camp there for New Years to be among the first Americans to welcome in the New Year.  Anyone know of the name of this place?  Is it in a National Forest or National Park?  Have you ever camped there before and if so, what's it like?

I just started planning a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP's. We're leaving from the SF Bay Area and I'm trying to map a route and I don't want to drive all that way without doing any sightseeing on the way (We're not necessarily taking a direct route. The northwest is up for grabs.) For anyone who has traveled in the northwest...any recommendations on where to stop or what to see? Thank you!

We do most of our camping in the National Forest. We like that we can get lost there and be off by ourselfs.

Go to the link above to view and read about our family trip into the Wenatchee National Forest in the state of Washington. We just completed an eight day vacation hiking, swimming, and enjoying what we've seen so far as some of the most beautiful country in the state of Washington. I'm not sure it comes close to comparison with other national forests in our country, but it is definitely worth a visit. Lake Wenatchee is actually a state park at which you can camp, but it does provide access to hundreds of trails near three different national forests, Glacier Peak being one of them.

I don't live near any National Forest at present; however, I have camped in several when I lived in Colorado, Pike National Forest being my favorite. There is one in Southern Illinois that I have visited, and one in Northern Wisconsin that I've hiked it. In August my son and I are headed to Acadia National Park, and plan on stopping in White Mountain National Forest.

Great idea to start this group. We have a National Parks group, but not National Forests, and there is a big difference. I've camped in a number of NF's before and love it. I especially love just pulling off down some dirt road and camping. The only thing I've had to worry about is maybe getting a fire permit. Otherwise, it's perfectly legal to camp just about anywhere. Of course, there are campgrounds in NF's too.

I camp in the Sequoia National Forest some -- you?
