Sandra,

Hope you are feeling better. Have you ever heard of Geri McPherson? He and his wife are primitive technologists and have several videos. I have this one and I think it fills you request: http://www.amazon.com/Deer-Field-Freezer-Geri-McPherson/dp/0967877733

Anyone know any good books on stalking deer?  Also, does anyone have a good book about how to gut and clean virtually any animal?  Or video, for that matter.

took this pic of a Bluebird (there is a mating pair) building a nest in a new bluebird box that I had built and put up about a month ago, I have 6 Bluebird boxes up and plan on building more. I know that I have at least 2 pair of nesting Bluebirds :)

My first deer hunt, relived.

I have always loved the outdoors, camping, fishing hunting, anything that has to do with the outdoors. I am 53 years old and on December 04, 2009 I was invited to go deer hunting with my brothers from Grandview Church of Christ, the same group that invited me to go hog hunting with them last year.

We were to meet at the church at 10:00 am. We went to a brother’s house to help him build a fire box, in my opinion an expert in the field of camp cooking, more on those abilities later even that made the trip fun for me. Then we hit the road to go to Clifton Texas, were we stayed with friends that I haven’t seen for several years. It was cold, they said that the snow was blowing horizontally, (for those who know the weather in Texas, this is believable). When we arrived about 3:00 pm the skies were mostly clear, again, Texas. The low was 24 degrees that night. But through the graciousness of our host, all sixteen of us slept in the house, which was the plan to begin with.

We started setting thing up, putting up wind breaks, getting the fire box and grill set up. Now that we had the fire going and the grill going we got to some very serious work., COOKING. Now back to our camp chef. We had steaks and baked potatoes as big as the state of Texas, may be exaggerateing a little here, but you get the message. We also had peach and apple cobblers cooked in Dutch ovens, oh the aromas of peaches, apples and cinnamon and the cooking over open fires using cast iron. The stakes were at least one and a half (1 ½ ) thick cooked to perfection over the open fire. The baked potatoes were buried in the coals, can you say perfection. Hats off to the chef. After we ate there were fellowshipping, and card playing going on. After about three hours of that we turned in for the night.

We got up at 4:30 am, got all of our cold weather cloth on, again the temperature was 24 degrees, but thankfully there was no wend blowing. It was only about a ten minute drive to the place we were to hunt. We met a man there that would let us in and take us to the stand that we were to hunt in. There were seven of us on the morning hunt. Since I was not very experienced in the hunting department, remember fishing is my strong point, I was hoping that I would be put in a stand with someone that knew what he was doing, but that was not the case, my luck. But little did I know, my luck was about to change.

I got settled in my stand about 5:30 am, it was a box stand about eight feet tall, facing a feeder about 100 yards away. About 6:00 I saw deer silhouettes at the feeder there still wasn’t enough light to see very well. As it got lighter I could see deer at the feeder, they were two bucks, one was an eight pointer and the other was a six, I was only to so shoot a doe if one presented me a shot. There a lot of deer that came through the area, both bucks and does. Probably from 6:00 to 8:00 there were at least twenty deer. Finally I saw THE one, I had to make sure that it was a doe and not a spike, and there were a lot of them on the property. I watched it for more than twenty minutes through my scope, from all sides to make sure that I didn’t see any spikes. When I was convinced that it was a doe, I took the safety off, put the crosshairs behind her shoulder and gently pulled the trigger. The Marlin 30-30 boomed in the blind , the bullet hit its mark, the doe bucked and went down, got up and went about forty yards and went down again. She went down in some grass, I watched her for a while. Something caught my eyes to the left, there were about ten deer coming back in. I looked back to the right where my deer was and she wasn’t there anymore. About 10:00 am the man that dropped me off at the stand came back to pick me up and asked me if I had shot anything, I told him yes and that she had went off into the woods. At that point my friends and I started tracking her. I found her about eighty yards from where she had first dropped.

There are many people that made this hunt happen for me, and I won’t publish their names here, but I am very thankful for them. Especially the one who I had the privilege to teach in my fifth and sixth grade bible class many, many years ago, he helped me track the deer , for today it is him, his brother and his dad that has thought me. I am thankful for my brothers and my friends at Grandview Church of Christ for their love and kindness that they provided to me. But most of all I am thankful for God and His creation and the beauty of the outdoors that surrounded at the hunt that was provided to me.

On thing on trophies, a trophy doesn’t have to be the biggest antlers or the biggest fish. A trophy is what you make it. In this case it was a doe, because it was the first deer that this fifty three year old man has shot, and I had some of the best men around me that I could ask for to help me celebrate MY trophy. THANK YOU LORD.

I want to tell ya two different story's about all the men & boy's in our family that went Deer Hunting. I thought it was so funny. One is about one of the younger boy's. He went out & forgot to take some toilet paper with him. Well guess what? He had to have a bowel movement. He couldn't figure out what to wipe with. So he cut part of his shirt off & used it. Then the other story is about my Husband. He had upper new dentures. And thet were bothering him. So he decided to take them out & put them in his top shirt pocket. ( Bad Ideal ) He bend over & they fell out & he didn't notice it. later he reach in his pocket to get them, & it wasn't there. Well by that time it was dark out side. So all the men got there flash light's walking all around the camp looking for his teeth. And guess what? They found them in the cow patty. I laugh so hard. I thought that was so funny.

Maybe I should make an Astronomy group. I know I'm a real avid star watcher. Maybe other people are too. I don't have a telescope (yet) but I've looked through other people's and seen the moon, Saturn's rings, and lots of amazing things.

Wow, Gary! I know how exciting that kind of thing can be. This weekend I saw a lot of shooting stars myself. Must have been an event of some kind.
