i think Tuesday I will make the "Ultimate Northern Beans" in the DO...and perhaps some bacon sweet cornbread to go along with them (made in the chicken fryer placed on a Lodge lid holder and toss a few coals on top for good measure)...mmm mmm
Thank you. Sounds interesting, like something I could get into. I ike to cook, albeit still somewhat of a novice over an open fire. I will check it out.
Sandy, they are "dutch ovens" and "dutch oven gatherings". There are groups all over the great US that just get together and back in dutch ovens. We belong the the Lone Star Dutch Oven Society and Little House Cookers. Look up Lone Star and you will see pictures. Little House Cookers is a part of Lone Star. There are national gathers, I heard where this years was, but don't remember since we didn't go, and there are cook off. It's a fun group to belong to and we do my favorite thing, eat!
My husband and I belong to a DO group parts of MN, WI, and IA. We don't get to many of the dogs because, like you, he does have to work many weekends. We do host one in Sept., though. He owns three 12", a 12 deep, a 14", at least one 10", and I think a 6". He does get me cooking when we do go to the dogs, but when we're camping, I am usually the helper. He does enjoy cooking in his dutch ovens, though.
Lets see, I have the 12", 10" and 8" camp dutch ovens...I have two 10" DO's without legs..a chicken fryer, and like 6 or so assorted size skillets. So yes, I do some at home..LOL
I hone my skills at home, just not as often as I like mainly because of the time I get home from work. The closest DO group that I am aware of is about a 2 hour drive away. They tend to hold their DOGs on Saturdays which is a typical workday for me unfortunately.
The Tech Blanket from Thermarest is a great piece of gear when it comes to hammock camping. The system was meant for the ground but it works great in a hammo...
