I just bought a bag you can cook sealed meals or cans in.  They come 10 to a bag.  I got it on Amazon - the name of it is Portable Camping Cooking Bag.

You can get dehydrated foods at your local grocery store, also sauces in powder form to add to your meals.  Minute rice is a good zip lock bag meal to cook.

Mike - it's good to hear that that works.  I would imagine any kind of pasta would work just as effectively as Ramen.  Plus I think I would throw in some freeze-dried peas or other vegetable for color and nutrition.

I had an Italian friend once who got me to try pasta, marinara sauce, and tuna.  I know it sounds disgusting to people who haven't tried it - but it's really quite good.  I got kinda hooked on it for awhile.

So you could take pasta, crush it up, add boiling water to soften, then drain it, then add some marinara sauce and tuna.

Because of the weight of the sauce (not dehydrated or freeze-dried) you might want to have that meal the first night.

David - you might want to post something in the Alabama group itself, too.

Still looking for someone in the northern Alabama area to do some backpacking with. I am still wanting to hike the Pinhoti. I'll do it alone but would love some company.

Ramen with with freezed dried meats works well for me. They are lightweight and compact. Unfortunately I have never been able to go on an extended backpacking trip. My trips tend to last 3 - 5 days and are spaced far enough apart that I don't get tired of eating these types of meals. I suspect I would get rather tired of ramen if I were to be out there for longer than a few days. Mountain House and other prepackaged meals are bulkier and much more expensive than what I take. While not necessarily an minimalist and an oz. watcher, I do try to keep my pack as light and small as possible. Thirty lbs. after 10 - 12 hours of walking kind of digs into your shoulders a bit.

After hiking say 8 to 12 miles I really do not want to spend time preparing food for dinner.  I enjoy mountain house pro paks - boil water, add to pak, zip up and wait 10 minutes.  No clean up because you eat out of the zip lock bag.  See http://www.mtnhse.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=M...

Very tasty!  See link if you are interested.

Hello.  I am wondering about easy cook and easy clean up recipes for backpacking?  I have enjoyed the boil water and pour in a bag style of cooking.  Get a zip lock freezer bag, a pkg of Ramein noodles, a foil pack of chicken or tuna, boil water, crush Ramein noodles up and pour into zip lock bag with chicken add boil water, hold keeping warm in your hat etc for about 4-5 minutes until noodles are soft, longer if you like softer noodles.  This was an easy very tasty satisfying meal.  I would love to find others just as easy.

Thank you for your suggestions. I looked those up and I think I will try the Packit gourmet next trip I take.
